Downtown Cambridge will come alive with the sounds of folk music from around the world on August 4, 5, and 6 at the 2017 Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music. With a variety of locations and venues, festival-goers will enjoy the free music while overlooking the Grand River in Mill Race Park’s Old World style amphitheatre, as well as the Civic Square around Cambridge City Hall, the Galt Room on the second floor of Café 13, and the Kiwi Gastropub.
The 2017 festival lineup will see 18 musical performers from Canada and across the world including Metis Fiddle playing to jug band music from the southern United States to local music from the Mediterranean and eastern Asia. In addition, four Morris dancing groups and six children’s performers are scheduled to appear.
“Looking back over the years, it’s amazing how the festival has grown and transformed,” said founding artistic director Brad McEwen. “While some things may have changed, the festival remains committed to showcasing traditional music of the many cultures represented by residents of Cambridge and the surrounding area. The festival was – and is – a leader in presenting traditional folk music from around the world on local stages for everyone to enjoy.”
There will also be arts and crafts available to browse, as well as selection of food and refreshments, or enjoy one of the many fine dining options available in Downtown Cambridge.
Over 100 volunteers are needed to make the festival a success each year. Donations are also welcomed as a way to cover costs of this festival and other musical events presented by the Mill Race Folk Society each year.
