“A family that plays together, stays together.” Perhaps that was the idea behind the creation of Family Day, a holiday that acts as a fun break from the February blahs. Since its inception in 2007, Family Day has been a time for families to get together, and enjoy a little quality time and have some fun!

The Family Day long weekend is also the perfect time to plan a road trip to Waterloo Region! Take advantage of the new Staycation Tax Credit and book a stay at any of our hotels, motels and inns. Then check out the list below and start planning all the fun things you can do together as you explore Waterloo Region!

1. Chicopee Ski

Waterloo Region is home to one of Ontario’s most popular ski and snowboard family centres. Grab your gear (or rent it there): Family Day is the perfect time to Discover Chicopee!

Why not get out and enjoy our Canadian winter with a day of snow tubing? Timed passes can be booked online: and if you work up an appetite, there are outdoor options available for BBQ food, as well as take & go food/beverage items.

Get some Satisfaction and head to THEMUSEUM in Kitchener to take in the Rolling Stones UNZIPPED exhibit. This is the first international exhibition devoted to the world-famous rock band, and it makes its debut in Canada at THEMUSEUM. The show boasts more than 300 original objects from the Stones’ personal collection: highlights include a replica of their recording studio, an immersive reconstruction of their Chelsea flat ‘Edith Grove’, and culminates in a mind-blowing three-dimensional experience.

Monday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Celebrate Family Day outdoors at the Kitchener Market! Strap on your skates and enjoy our synthetic ice rink with live music on the piazza (near the King Street entrance). There will be free hot chocolate, and Chef D and his team will be selling fresh donuts and other snacks from their wood-fired popup kitchen. You can also register for indoor, family-focused programming with a Chef Nicole cooking class or crafting a smash book with Mindful Makers.

7. St. Jacobs & Aberfoyle Model Railway

This amazing “O” Scale model railway layout in St. Jacobs is generally closed during the winter; however, it does open for families to enjoy during the Family Day weekend!

8. Rediscover the Long Weekend in St. Jacobs

Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for residents to fish Ontario waters for free. Locally, you can try your hand at ice fishing at Shade’s Mills Conservation Area in Cambridge (weather permitting: check here for the daily ice fishing status).

Monday, Feb. 21st
Visit KWAG for free family-friendly art activities inspired by its current exhibitions. Create a star, moon, or planet that represents your family, and add it to the growing interactive universe on view throughout Expressions 47. Explore the experimental sketchbooks created through the InSight project, and make a miniature zine inspired by your family. Art activities are designed for ages 4-12 with an adult companion.

16. Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery @ Home Kits
This family day you can relax and create your own clay artwork at home, then bring it into the Clay & Glass Gallery for firing. Each kit comes with everything you need to create your work of art – choose from a Charcuterie Plate Kit, a Claytime at Home kit, or even a Date Night Workshop @ home.

Join Bring on the Sunshine for a diverse offering of culture, education, music and dance. Catch it on YouTube LIVE at 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on February 19th – 20th and February 21st at 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the Kids Family Day Session!

The Great Backyard Bird Count is on at the Waterloo Region Museum! Download the free eBird app and head out on the museum’s 60-acre site and look for birds. Learn how to make a simple birdfeeder: all activities and bird guides are INCLUDED in the price of admission! If your family prefers to relax at home on the long weekend, check out WRM’s Museum At Home offerings for fun indoor and outdoor things to do.

20. Artshine Free Family Workshop
Saturday, Feb. 19th 

Gather your family and your favourite art supplies, and join Artshine on Saturday evenings for FREE virtual family workshops! Their Family Day weekend workshop is Wonderful Paper You, and will keep the family busy with hours of fun creating paper people and playing dress-up! Registration is not required.

21. North Dumfries Community Centre Family Day Fun
Monday, Feb. 21st 9AM to Noon
Family skates, pickleball, and treks on the walking track are all part of this year’s family day event at the North Dumfries Community Centre in Ayr. Pre-registration is required for some events and there are there are capacity limits for some activities.
