Perhaps that was the idea behind the creation of Family Day, a holiday that acts as a fun break from the February blahs. Since its inception in 2007, Family Day has been a time for families to get together, and enjoy a little quality time and have some fun!

The Family Day long weekend is also the perfect time to plan a road trip to Waterloo Region! Check out the list of Things to Do below and start planning all the fun things you can do together as you explore Waterloo Region!

1. Chicopee Ski

Waterloo Region is home to one of Ontario’s most popular ski and snowboard family centres. Grab your gear (or rent it there): Family Day is the perfect time to Discover Chicopee!

2. Chicopee Tube Park

Why not get out and enjoy our Canadian winter with a day of snow tubing? Timed passes can be booked online: and if you work up an appetite, there are outdoor options available for BBQ food, as well as take & go food/beverage items.

3. Visit the Winter House at Langdon Hall

The Winter House is Langdon Hall’s outdoor, heated dining space with warm cocktails, tapas-style plates and more. Winter House is an outdoor experience so make sure to dress for the weather (there are heaters to enhance your visit). Walk-ins are welcome: you can also book in advance.

4. Follow the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market Chocolate Trail
Saturday, Feb. 15
For the month of February the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market (Canada’s largest year-round farmers’ market) is highlighting CHOCOLATE! Follow the chocolate trail to find vendors selling chocolate and chocolate pastries. Pick up a Chocolate Trail Map at the main entrances to each of the Farmers’ Market buildings.

5. DTK Travellers Tour
Begins on Sunday, Feb. 16th
If you’re a Foodie Family, why not embark on a culinary journey that celebrates the flavours, sounds, and creativity of cultures around the world with Downtown Kitchener’s DTK Traveller’s Tour!
From February 16th to March 9th, the Kitchener Public Library (Central branch) will transform into a vibrant hub of cultural celebration, featuring live music, family activities, and sample foods that celebrate a different cultural region each week, prepared by downtown Kitchener restaurants.

6. Critter Corner at Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory

Warm up in Cambridge Butterfly’s tropical garden and experience up-close encounters with live insects at their Critter Corner. Regular admission required.

7. Family Day Rides at Waterloo Central Railway
Sunday, Feb. 16 & Monday, February 17
Experience a scenic winter heritage train ride with the whole family! Passengers of all ages will be captivated by the wide-open views of the countryside and nearby Mennonite farms as they travel through Woolwich Township. Extra-special activities will be available on board the train for children! This round-trip journey begins at either the Waterloo Northfield Station or Farmers Market Station.

8. Fire & Ice Family Day Weekend in St. Jacobs

Enjoy a cozy and memorable weekend filled with delicious dining, unique shopping, and charming small-town vibes at Fire and Ice in the Village of St. Jacobs. Look for outdoor fire pits, warm cocoa and apple cider, and free events – including free skating at the St. Jacobs Arena Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 2:30-3:30PM!

Explore the exhibitions and create dynamic art projects. Spend Family Day immersed in art and creativity in KWAG’s Community Access Space! It’s Family Day, and the kids are taking over the Gallery!

10. Go Fishing with your Family!

Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for residents to fish Ontario waters for free. Locally, you can try your hand at ice fishing at Shade’s Mills Conservation Area in Cambridge (weather permitting: check here for the daily ice fishing status).

11. Discovery Space Anniversary Party at Schneider Haus
Monday, Feb. 17 11am – 4pm
Celebrate the 1st anniversary of the Discovery Space at historic Schneider Haus in Kitchener. Tinker, create, build, and play this Family Day: special guest makers will be onsite to guide families in tinkering and making activities. While you’re there check out the 209 year old historic house and learn about the Schneider family. For family day only, receive a free family pass with paid admission (one per family) to visit us again with your chosen family! 

12. Kingpin Cambridge

Woodside (the boyhood home of William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada’s tenth and longest-serving Prime Minister) is pleased to invite you to this historic house on Family Day! Enjoy tours on the hour, crafts and other fun activities for the whole family. After you visit the home, be sure to explore the beautiful trails outside.

16. KW Titans Family Day Game
Monday, Feb. 17th at 2pm

Catch exciting professional basketball action as the KW Titans battle the Jamestown Jackals at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium!

17. Claytime at the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery
Saturday, Feb. 1 6 & Sunday, Feb. 17
Discover the art of working with clay! Their instructor will demonstrate basic hand building techniques and will show you examples of what you can make using clay. Then you will make a small project of your choice!
Note: Children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult who also has a ticket.

18. Adventure Rooms Kitchener

19. Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum Family Day Fair
Monday, Feb. 17 11amto 4pm
It’s a day of magic and fun at the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum with local magician Scott Boyd! Scott will bring his incredible talent and charm to our grand theatre in an all ages performance that will amaze you! There will also be fun fair games, a wiggle car track, confections (including a special beaver tail treat will be included for the first 100 tickets) and gallery exploration. Register to be part of the fun!

20. North Dumfries Community Centre Family Day Fun
Monday, Feb. 17th 9am to 12:30pm
Celebrate Family Day Fun at the North Dumfries Community Complex.  Bring the whole family for a day of fun, music, and skating! All are welcome to attend this free event. Eric Jackson and The Willow River Band will be playing an acoustic set in the NDCC foyer from 9am to 10am and 11am to 12pm. Artist Vrushikaben Mehul Mistry will be doing a Rangoli art demonstration in the NDCC foyer from 11am to 12pm.
