Artist Background:
Alanah is an Indigenous illustrator, painter, and muralist from Oneida Nation of the Thames, currently residing in Kitchener-Waterloo. She received her Bachelor in Honours Sociology, and used this education to better understand race and racism, marginalization, and oppression, and has included this in her career as an artist. She started illustrating at the end of 2018 and became a full-time painter in 2019. She organizes Indigenous Art Markets (I AM Kitchener) in KW, and works with the Indigenous community to provide emerging artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their art.
Artist Concept Statement:
Using traditional Ojibway florals, Alanah highlighted Indigenous peoples’ connection to the land. The flowers and plants she painted include plant life that is indigenous to the Region of Waterloo, and by extension, celebrates the plant life and people that originated from this area.
Reason for Participating in Art Fresco Public Art Project:
For Alanah, it was important to take part in a project that strengthens the connection between Indigenous people and the Region of Waterloo. As an emerging Indigenous Artist, the Art Fresco Project allowed her to take advantage of an opportunity to create Indigenous representation within the region. The strengths of the project lay in its ability to showcase the diversity among artists in our community, which is something she is passionate about.
