SUMMARY:The da Vinci Dialogues ft. Professor Robert Van Pelt
DESCRIPTION:There Was No Renaissance The conventional divide between the Middle Ages and Renaissance overlooks a more complicated story. This lecture presents Renaissance humanism as the culmination of medieval traditions of synthesis\, as scholars sought to reconcile classical\, Christian\, Arabic\, civic\, and craft knowledge. Architecture made this confidence visible through works such as Brunelleschi’s San Lorenzo and Alberti’s theories\, which brought together classical proportion\, Christian ritual\, medieval practice\, and civic ambition. Yet as knowledge expanded\, this project of synthesis became increasingly difficult to sustain\, helping prepare the shift from Renaissance concord toward Reformation conflict. Admission to this event includes admission to THEMUSEUM. Adults: $21\,99/ Students: $18\,99/ 55 & better: $18\,99  Speaker Bio Robert Jan van Pelt has taught at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture since 1987 and has held academic appointments at institutions across Europe\, Asia\, and North America. He is the author or co-author of thirteen books and has received numerous honors\, including a National Jewish Book Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. An internationally recognized authority on the history and architecture of Auschwitz\, his work has contributed significantly to forensic architecture and the study of Holocaust history. He has served as an expert witness\, consultant\, curator\, and advisor on major projects and exhibitions\, including The Evidence Room\, presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Aperitivo - Life Drawing with Baz Kanold
DESCRIPTION:This 3- hour is the perfect beginners course to learning how to draw the figure using a live model. In this session\, we’ll start with basics like finding through lines and simplifying the form\, and work together to increase your confidence in capturing the figure and finding your style\, and have a lot of fun while doing it! Please note that this session will include a live\, nude model\, so we suggest ages 16+ for this event.   Bio:   Baz Kanold They/Them Mixed Media Art Instructor   Baz Kanold is a mixed media artist graduated in 2021 from the Fine Arts program at the University of Waterloo. Previously\, they studied advertising and graphic design at Sheridan College\, followed by several years of working as a graphic designer. Instead of continuing on working a nine-to-five office job\, they decided to advance their education in the arts in order to pursue their dream of becoming an artist.   Their artwork over recent years has developed into an investigation and celebration of sexuality and gender identity — though they still find time to pepper in some nerdiness when they have the chance. While they consider themselves a mixed media artist\, they have a general focus on oil painting\, conté or pencil on paper\, and digital drawing.   The ticket price includes instructors\, access to all necessary tools\, and materials required for the activity.   Drinks will be available for purchase in THELOUNGE; card payments only.

SUMMARY:The da Vinci Dialogues ft. Professor Brendan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Brendan Stewart\, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph\, explores how ordinary suburban strip malls can become vibrant public gathering places when we rethink the purpose of the spaces around them. Drawing on the award-winning plazaPOPS initiative\, Stewart shares how twelve Toronto strip-mall parking lots were temporarily transformed into welcoming community spaces between 2019 and 2024. Through observation\, mapping\, and conversations with participants\, the project examined how people used these reimagined spaces-revealing the important role public space plays in everyday life and demonstrating how experimentation can inspire more connected\, inclusive communities. The presentation highlights the project’s key findings and reflects on how collaboration across design\, research\, community organizations\, and government can help unlock the potential of overlooked places\, offering new approaches to creating public space in suburban neighborhoods.
