Family owned and operated, Anna Mae’s Restaurant and Bakery is an excellent choice for Mennonite meals and baking, and it’s less than 30 minutes from Waterloo Region, St. Jacobs, Drayton, and Stratford. Located in Millbank, Anna Mae’s has 20+ freshly baked desserts and 18+ homemade pies every day, including gluten free options. They specialize in Mennonite cooking and baking, and offer a number of specials that include a choice of meat, potato, vegetable, and dinner roll.
Anna Mae Wagler, a local Mennonite lady, started baking pies in her home in 1978 and sold them at the end of her laneway. In November 1991, Anna Mae moved to a new home, and opened her bakery at its current location on Perth Line 72, adjacent to her house. First, it was only intended to be a bakery and small café with seven tables and a counter. When a guest requested a hot meal, the promise of offering great Mennonite cooking began, and is still delivered today.
The five-week rotating meat schedule is popular with guests who come on the nights when their favourites are served! Anna Mae’s menu also features broasted chicken, which is a popular choice amongst regulars and visitors, and has contributed greatly to the restaurant’s success!
In 2001, Anna Mae sold her business to Marlene and Mel Herrfort with a promise to operate under the same business practices and principles. Over the years, the Herrforts put an addition on the bakery, the lobby, and the seating areas, and in 2007, a wind turbine was installed to help power the facility. In May 2015, the restaurant was featured on the Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here”.
Dine at Anna Mae’s Restaurant and Bakery for an authentic Mennonite experience, and be sure to reserve the “Buggy Booth” to add fun and nostalgia to your visit!
