Homer Watson House & Gallery celebrates the legacy of Canadian landscape artist, Homer Watson, and his creative spirit through the appreciation, enjoyment, and practice of visual arts.
Homer Watson was the first Canadian-born artist to be recognized internationally. In 1880, his painting “The Old Mill” was bought by the Governor General Marquis of Lorne for $300 and was gifted to Queen Victoria’s Royal Collection. Early success allowed Mr. Watson to enjoy a long career as a painter. His work can be found at the National Art Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario and Buckingham Palace.
Homer Watson House was built in Doon by Canadian businessman and political figure Adam Ferrie. Homer Watson admired the house, and in 1881 he rented the home’s third floor and lived there with his wife Roxanna. By 1883, Watson had achieved artistic success and purchased the Ferrie house as well as the two and three quarter acres it was situated on. The house would remain Watson’s home until his death in 1936.
In 1981 the City of Kitchener purchased the historic house and it became known as Homer Watson House & Gallery. It is a creative domain for artists, featuring exhibition space where regional artists can showcase their work. It also offers a full range of visual arts programs for all ages, as well as special programs, events and activities. Many of Watson’s paintings are still on display at the house.
For those looking for a unique venue for corporate or family events, Homer Watson House & Gallery offers its historic space for conferences, meetings, employee appreciation events, as well as weddings, anniversaries and family functions. A unique facility, it offers historic architecture and local art, as well as lush grounds that are perfect for outdoor events. Small groups will enjoy the intimate setting of the Main Gallery, while the stunning gardens surrounding the house provide an ideal setting for any event.
