City of Cambridge
The Old Post Office in Cambridge is the newest location of Idea Exchange. It is Canada’s first all-digital library, and is a creative space for visitors to tinker, explore, fabricate and build!
From the outside, visitors will be awed by the beauty of this iconic 19th century building, with its majestic clock tower, textures, and beautiful stonework that harkens back to a bygone era. A National Historic Site, the former Galt Post Office was constructed in 1885 and designed by Thomas Fuller – the same architect who designed the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. By 2012, this once iconic two-and-a-half storey building had fallen into disrepair. It was then that the City of Cambridge and Idea Exchange came together to re-purpose the building and bring it into the 21st century.
DYK: The Old Post Office was awarded the 2018 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence by Canadian Architect
The Old Post Office location of Idea Exchange is divided into 4 floors, each with its own unique focus. With creative studios, a discovery centre, makerspace, as well as a reading space and café with partner Monigram Coffee Roasters, the building offers access to tools and services such as 3D printing, laser-cutting, audio recording, and more. It’s also a meeting place – a community gathering space where all ages can discover and learn.
Adding to the beauty of the building’s historic façade is the digital light show that illuminates the building Thursday to Saturday nights. Visitors can watch as visual effects transform the building’s exterior during a spectacular light show that is projected on the Water Street side of the digital library. Visit ideaexchange.org for current show times.
