Fresh-picked flavour and family tradition: Barrie’s Asparagus Farm & Country Market 

A stop at Barrie’s Asparagus Farm & Country Market is a true taste of Waterloo Region’s farming heritage—with a twist. Located just outside of the City of Cambridge, this fifth-generation farm is known for its fresh, in-season asparagus and rhubarb, roasted-on-site coffee, and locally sourced products that keep visitors coming back! 

Tim Barrie leads the family-run operation with the help of his son Will (co-owner of the on-site coffee business Blacksmith & Bean), daughter Hannah (general manager and product developer), and sister Becky (store operations and customer service). Their farming roots run deep: Tim and Becky’s grandfather is an inductee in the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame for his contributions to agriculture.  

Each spring during May and June, the fields at the Barrie farm come alive with tender green spears of asparagus and crisp rhubarb that are harvested and sold fresh at their on-farm market. However, visitors can savor these signature flavours long after the growing season is over as Barrie’s produces its own line of asparagus salsas, pickled asparagus, asparagus pestos, asparagus antipastos, asparagus hot sauces, rhubarb salad dressing, and so much more. The farm market’s best seller are their tortilla chips made with asparagus —especially the Mexican Spice and Lightly Salted flavours!

The Barrie family also brews up something extra special on the farm: Blacksmith & Bean is their small-batch coffee brand. What started as Will Barrie’s high school co-op project by roasting beans at their farm has now grown to producing coffee that is sold to over 100 wholesale partners, and inventive coffee products available at the farm including coffee-infused chocolate, BBQ sauces, candles, and more.
