Artist Concept Statement:
Joseph & Gaukel is located in the heart of Kitchener and has been a site for gatherings that celebrate the diversity of our region. Annually it is the venue for the multicultural festival, and more recently a space connecting the KW Solidarity March and the Land Back Camp. This intersection continues to symbolize the many backgrounds of the community members that make up our city in one unified place.
Reason for Participating in Art Fresco Public Art Project:
Participating in the Art Fresco Public Art Project was a part of Pia’s personal journey to assert herself into the region’s art community as a BIPOC artist. Increased engagement in the underrepresented local art scene, being a part of this event was one of Pia’s many acts to contribute in dismantling systemic racism in Waterloo Region.
Artist Background:
Entirely self-taught, Pia’s eye for minimalism has led her to where she is with her art today. Her work is focused on digital mediums, but Pia also works with acrylics paintings in her studio at KW Artists Co-op. Over the past 3 years, Pia has been involved in Central Art Walks, CreateWaterloo events, and has also competed at TheMuseum’s Brush Off.
