Artist Concept Statement:
Shawn has driven and meandered through Waterloo Region for for over 20 years, and he’s always uncovering new things. His concepts highlight just a handful of sights and attractions the area has to offer.
Reason for Participating in Art Fresco Public Art Project:
Shawn participated in the Art Fresco Project to give people a place to sit to soak it all in, and make discoveries of their own.
Artist Background:
Born in Ottawa, Canada, Shawn Murenbeeld is an art director, designer, illustrator and sculptor. He has worked across virtually all conceivable design fields, from organizational identities to catalogues to product design, as well as in advertising, video and interactive media. Always tinged with a fresh personal style, the results have received dozens of national and international awards, including the prestigious One Show, Communications Arts, American Illustration and 3×3, and has been featured in ten textbooks on design. When he’s not working, he’s crafting his illustrations and 3D sculptures – what he calls ‘urban folk art’. Jumping between his woodworking shop in the garage and his studio in the basement, Shawn gives wood and commonplace objects a new lease on life.
