These artist-designed picnic tables have found new homes throughout the Region to be enjoyed for years to come
WATERLOO, ON — For the past two years, Explore Waterloo Region (EWR) has injected colour and vibrancy into the region’s hospitality sector with the Art Fresco Table project. As the project comes to an end, EWR has made the decision to donate all of the picnic tables and has provided them to local businesses and BIA’s.
“We are excited the Art Fresco tables will continue to be enjoyed by visitors and local guests,” says Michele Saran, CEO of Explore Waterloo Region. “It’s a wonderful way to continue the Art Fresco legacy, and to continue to shine a light on the local artists who painted the tables, as well as the spaces where the tables will be located in the future.”
Conceived and executed by the team at Explore Waterloo Region, the Art Fresco Table project was launched in the summer of 2020 as a way to support the hospitality and arts sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic. 50 picnic tables were built by St. Clements Trim Inc., and a panel of judges evaluated submissions received from interested local artists. Artists were asked to submit design concepts for the tables that both celebrated Waterloo Region and honoured those things that make Waterloo Region unique.
Selected artists painted the tables at the former Lot 42 — a large venue that allowed the artists to work on their art while maintaining physical distancing. Paint and supplies were provided by Home Hardware’s head office in St. Jacobs and Beauti-tone Paint.
“The Art Fresco project received amazing support from our community,” says Schneider. “While we’re ending the formal campaign for the project, people will still be able to find information about the tables, their permanent homes and the artists who painted them on the Explore Waterloo Region website.”
More information on the Art Fresco artists and the locations where the tables have been donated can be found at artfresco.ca.
