January 17, 2023 – Two weeks back, Ava Murphy and Caitlin Kraemer barely knew each other.

They are now permanently connected.

The local hockey stars — Murphy is a 17-year-old defender from Kitchener, and Kraemer is a 16-year-old forward from Waterloo — were exhausted and exuberant Tuesday, less than 48 hours after helping Canada strike gold at the IIHF under-18 women’s world hockey championship in Östersund, Sweden.

Murphy and Kraemer, along with forward Emma Pais of London, Ont., were named Canada’s top players at the tournament and received commemorative luxury watches after a 10-0 win over Sweden in the gold-medal game.
