November is that in-between time of year. The days get shorter, the lights begin to twinkle, and little hints of the holiday season start appearing around every corner. It might be your first holiday event, a wander through a festive market, or simply an excuse to sip something delicious and soak up a little seasonal magic.
You don’t have to be ready for the holidays just yet to enjoy a little wonder. Across Waterloo Region, the first signs of the season are starting to appear, offering plenty of ways to ease into the festivities, discover things to do, and start making plans for the most wonderful time of year.
See St. Jacobs Sparkle
The first twinkle of holiday lights has a way of making the season feel a little more magical. Sparkles in St. Jacobs returns November 12–15 and November 19–22, transforming the village into a festive destination for holiday shopping, seasonal entertainment, and a little extra wonder.
Wander among thousands of twinkling lights, explore the village’s unique shops and eateries, and enjoy special evening hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Along the way, you might catch the sounds of the Waterloo County Carollers, enjoy a free horse-and-wagon ride, or even spot Santa making his way through town.
Sip, Shop, and Get Inspired
If your idea of seasonal magic involves discovering unique finds and enjoying a little treat along the way, the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market Holiday Sip & Shop is a lovely way to ease into holiday shopping. Browse local offerings, find inspiration for the season ahead, and enjoy a festive outing without feeling like you need to have your entire holiday to-do list checked off just yet.
All Aboard the Holiday Magic
There’s something about a brightly lit train rolling into town that makes the season feel a little more magical. On November 21, the CPKC Holiday Train makes its stop in Cambridge, bringing dazzling lights, live music, and plenty of festive cheer to downtown Galt. Catch performances by Magic! and MARIS from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. at the Malcolm Street train station, and enjoy a seasonal tradition that brings the community together in support of local food banks. Consider bringing a food or monetary donation and make this a festive afternoon outing to remember.
insider Tip: The train also stops in the village of Ayr in North Dumfries Township, so you have two opportunities to take in the fun when the train heads through Waterloo Region! The train arrives at 5:30 p.m. at Inglis Street & Willison Streets in Ayr.
Let the Lights Lead the Way
Sometimes, the first real taste of holiday magic comes from a car ride surrounded by thousands of twinkling lights. Gift of Lights at Bingemans returns November 20th bringing a little extra sparkle to the season with a dazzling drive-through display. Take in more than 300 animated and static light displays, drive through glowing light tunnels, and marvel at a spectacular 40-foot LED tree. With festive sights around every turn, it’s an easy way to turn an ordinary evening into a seasonal outing the whole family can enjoy.
Turn Up the Holiday Soundtrack
Ready for a little wonder after dark? Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night, part of Cambridge Winterfest, transforms downtown Cambridge into a glowing, music-filled experience on Friday, November 27. The evening begins at Cambridge City Hall’s Civic Square, where a light-filled countdown kicks off a walk through downtown. Along the route, discover interactive light installations, live LED performers, and the distinctive sounds of Phil Kline’s music playing through speaker stations. Make an evening of it by arriving early to explore the Cambridge Holiday Market, running from 5 to 9 p.m. at City Hall and the Cambridge Centre for the Arts. It’s the perfect opportunity to browse local vendors, find a few unique gifts, and soak up the first big wave of holiday excitement.
Put the Mistletoe Trail on Your Holiday List
The holidays are all about discovering traditions, revisiting favourite places, and finding new reasons to explore close to home. The Mistletoe Trail is returning to Waterloo Region, making it the perfect time to start thinking about adding it to your holiday plans. As December approaches, keep it on your radar and get ready to discover the local stops and experiences that make the season feel special.
Start Your Season with a Little Wonder
You don’t need to deck every hall or have your holiday shopping underway to enjoy this time of year. Sometimes, the best part of the season is the beginning: the first twinkle of lights, the first festive outing, and the first excuse to feel a little merry.
So follow the sparkle, explore somewhere new, and let the anticipation build. The holidays will be here before you know it, and there’s already plenty of wonder to discover in Waterloo Region.
