The da Vinci Dialogues ft. Brent Ellis

In this presentation, members of the Hydrocut Trail Team explore how a remarkable engineering concept sketched by Leonardo da Vinci more than 500 years ago found new life in one of Waterloo Region’s most beloved mountain biking destinations.
Attendees will discover the story behind the Hydrocut’s Da Vinci Bridge, a self-supporting wooden structure inspired by Leonardo’s original design and adapted to span a creek within the community forest. Through the bridge’s development, the presentation highlights how Renaissance ingenuity continues to influence modern engineering and outdoor recreation.
Driven by the Waterloo Cycling Club (WCC) and its mission to foster fun, accessible, and inclusive mountain biking, the project became a true community collaboration. Learn how volunteer trail builders, licensed Professional Engineers (P.Engs), and local business partners worked together through the Hydrocut Trail Committee to transform a centuries-old concept into a durable piece of trail infrastructure enjoyed by thousands of riders each year.
