The Hydrocut

Waterloo Region is home to one of Ontario’s top-ranked mountain bike riding destinations, known as The Hydrocut.

The Hydrocut is a series of 25 connected trails, located on two pieces of land connected by a hydro corridor. With trail names such as ‘Adam’s Run’, ‘Kamikaze’, and ‘Mountain Goat Loop’, each trail has its own character, difficulty rating and unique set of features. The Hydrocut is recognized across Canada for its 30 km of uninterrupted trails, and is used by over 40,000 visitors per year. Parking lots to the two main entrances of The Hydrocut are located at 1522 Glasgow Street in Kitchener, and 1974 Snyder’s Road East in Petersburg.

DYK: The Hydrocut’s name comes from the fact the main trails were developed under a series of hydro power line towers that today connect the two main sections of the trails system: The Landfill or Glasgow side, and the Pines or Snyder’s Road side.

The Hydrocut is made up of moderate, advanced and expert trails to challenge riders of all levels, and also has 5 kids’ loops for younger riders to enjoy.

A number of weekly rides along The Hydrocut are offered, including a Monday Ladies Ride, the Thursday Skills Ride, and Thursday Night Lights – an evening ride through the trails. Riders can enjoy the trails all year, including during the winter months when most trails continue to be groomed.

The Hydrocut is maintained and operated by the Waterloo Cycling Club in collaboration with the Region of Waterloo. A volunteer committee provides the leadership for the design and building of new trails, as well as the ongoing maintenance, monitoring and reporting of the trail’s usage.

All trails are one-direction and signed, with maps posted at three different kiosks throughout the trail system. A downloadable map is available from their website , and can also be found on the Trailforks app.

The Hydrocut trails are free to use. More than 2,500 volunteer hours are put into the maintenance and development of the system’s trails every year. The Friends of The HydroCut program helps to raise money for trail initiatives.
