New Hamburg has been Waterloo Region’s best kept secret for years, but it’s time to shine a spotlight on this gem of a town.

The downtown core of New Hamburg is a designated Heritage Conservation District, and is home to a variety of unique shops, award winning restaurants, and beautiful parkland where you can walk, picnic, and play! The Township of Wilmot offers a self-guided heritage walking tour where you can learn about New Hamburg’s rich past, and admire the variety of architectural styles and details that form this historic streetscape.

Steps from the downtown, visitors can wander the pathway to view the towering 50 ft waterwheel that was constructed to reflect the town’s industrial beginnings. Located in Scott Park, this magnificent structure provides a backdrop to the mighty Nith River and provides the perfect photo-op. Also located in Scott Park is the boat launch which provides river access for canoeing, kayaking, or paddle boarding. For the angler, the Nith River is abundant in brown trout and smallmouth bass. You will often see locals fishing from the large boulders that provide steps across the river.

Several walking trails are a short distance from town, and the new Mike Schout Wetlands Preserve has a beautiful boardwalk that is accessible to all. Each year in August, Canada’s largest Mopar Car Show draws thousands of car enthusiasts to New Hamburg for this multi-day event. Cruise Night and Sidewalk Sale Days bring a festive excitement to the downtown. New Hamburg is also home to the Mennonite Relief Sale, which draws crowds to the quilt auction. Proceeds from the auction support the Mennonite Central Committee which provides relief efforts worldwide.  This sale has raised over $12 million since it began in 1967.
