This year’s Foxwood Open Disc Golf Tournament takes place at Foxwood Golf & Country Club in Baden May 18-20, 2024.
The tournament has grown in size and prestige since the inaugural event in 2020. The roster at this year’s Foxwood Open has nearly doubled in size and will feature 225 of the best disc golfers from across North America. The Foxwood Open is a PDGA A-Tier tournament, as well as a qualifying event for the United States Disc Golf Championship and the Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship.
Adam Hussey is a past Tournament Director of the Foxwood Open, and Board Member of Grand River Disc Golf. We sat down with Adam for a rapid-fire Interview to find out what’s in store for this year’s Foxwood Open.
5 Rapid-fire Questions with Adam Hussey
1. What makes disc golf such a great sport?
Adam: It’s affordable, easy to learn, and it doesn’t take a long time to play. The players also make disc golf great – there’s a bunch of awesome people who play it.
2. Why do you think disc golfers have embraced this event, leading to its 5th year in Waterloo Region?
Adam: Waterloo Region has the trifecta here. It’s easy to get to for anyone in Ontario, and for players coming from out of Province and country it’s only an hour away from Pearson International Airport. Players can even fly right into the Region thanks to the Waterloo Region International Airport.
The venue at Foxwood is also ideal for large-scale tournaments. It’s a great course, and is rated in the top 10 disc golf courses in the world played on a ball golf course. The venue at Foxwood is capable of hosting large numbers of people – which is why the tournament is able to continue growing.
3. What makes the course at Foxwood so fun and/or challenging to play?
Adam: It’s a challenging course – which is appropriate as the Foxwood Open is a USDGC qualifier. There’s a combination of long bomb holes, but there are also some really good opportunities for technical shots. Another aspect that makes Foxwood a very challenging course is the wind! Foxwood really has some teeth when the wind starts blowing.
4. What’s your favourite moment/ memory from the Foxwood Open?
Adam: 100% it was local player Joe Vander Veen beating Canadian Legend Martin Hendel for the final USDGC spot in a playoff at the 2022 tournament. His post celebration back flip was epic!
5. Other than taking in the Foxwood Open itself, what’s your favourite thing to do/ place to go while you’re in Waterloo Region?
Adam: You’ll find me playing disc golf at all the other courses in the area of course! We have some of the best courses in Ontario here in the Waterloo region – we’re pretty fortunate.
But who doesn’t like food? We also have so many awesome restaurants and pubs locally. EJ’s Tavern in Baden, the Huether Hotel in Waterloo and Four Fathers Brewery in Cambridge are all regular go-tos for me!
