Getting to Know the Township of Woolwich

Growing towns and villages are intermingled with pastoral rural settings in the Township of Woolwich.

Visit the Village of St. Jacobs with its boutique shops, innovative businesses, microbrewery and biergarten, as well as an array of restaurants and food options. Enjoy freshly baked goods in a Mennonite-run bakery as you watch horse and buggies drive by or watch as hand-made corn brooms are constructed in one of the last shops of its kind in Canada.

Not far from St. Jacobs you’ll discover the last remaining covered bridge in Ontario – the West Montrose Covered Bridge. Built in 1881, the bridge has survived high winds, floods, snow and ice storms, as well as the test of time. Today the bridge is still used by pedestrians, horse and buggies and light vehicles to cross over the Grand River. This insta-worthy landmark is also known for its more romantic side; locals call it “The Kissing Bridge” as couples have been known to share a kiss while riding through the sheltered structure!

The Township of Woolwich is where you’ll find some of the Waterloo Region’s largest attractions. The St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market is Canada’s largest year-round farmers’ market. Take a stroll through the Market to discover everything from farm fresh meats and produce to wine and cider products and unique arts and crafts. In the nearby town of Elmira, the annual Elmira Maple Syrup Festival holds the Guinness Book of World Record title of the World’s Largest Single Day Maple Syrup Festival.

Woolwich Township has several public trails that are perfect for walking, running, cycling, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. The Trans Canada Trail links to several existing trails in Woolwich Township including the Kissing Bridge Trailway, Mill Race Trail, and the Health Valley Trail.

Woolwich is truly a rural oasis just minutes from the city!
